Allotment

This term we held our Miniature World Garden Competition. Each class from Nursery to Year 6 created their own miniature garden in their class planter with animals and plants from that region or area. Inspiration for our competition this year was based around the Lullingstone World Gardens in Kent.

All of the classes did incredibly well and put lots of effort into their designs. We had minibeast and dinosaur themed gardens in Nursery, gardens based on the African Savannah in Reception and Year 1, a jungle safari garden in Year 2 based around topic learning in school, a world cup themed garden with national flowers and plants from the countries taking part, a miniature fairy garden in Year 5 whereby children had created fairy houses out of clay and finally a traditional English woodland garden in Year 6.

The competition created lots of excitement and interest amongst the children who have all participated in this project.

Children from the Eco-Council at St Mary's were responsible for judging the best class planter with help from one of our School Governors. Their responses were so thoughtful and they really are a credit to the school with their respectful behaviour and attitudes towards the judging process.

It was decided that Year 4's class planter was the winner this year as it scored the highest against key criteria which included: Is it colourful? Is it exciting and or imaginative? Are there animals and or plants from that region? Have any re-used/upcycled materials been used? Is it good for wildlife?

Well done to Year 4 and well done to everyone who took part. What a lovely space St Mary's have created together. It has created lots of interest in gardening as well as supporting our school's biodiversity.
